Dr. Abu Sani is a highly experienced Petroleum Engineer with over 25 years of professional experience in both the Academia and the Oil & Gas Industry. He is currently the President and CEO of PAK Engineering Corporation, Houston, Texas, USA. His company provides Engineering and Project Management Consultancy Services. Dr. Sani is very versatile and results-driven engineer with an unmatched track record of achievements. He has a patent and has presented and published over 30 technical papers and reports in Journals, Conferences, and Meetings.

Dr. Sani obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria. He started his career with Shell Petroleum Development Company in Port Harcourt as a Project Management Assistant. He later obtained an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from KFUPM Dhahran, KSA, an M.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, USA and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, USA. During these periods he has held different roles—research assistant, teaching assistant and substitute lecturer.

Dr. Sani worked as an Environmental Engineer with the Department of Environmental Quality, Oklahoma, USA where he was in-charged of inspection, permitting and monitoring of industrial and municipal wastewater discharge facilities.

Dr. Sani spent more than a decade with Schlumberger (SLB) Oilfield Services, where he was responsible for several high-profile projects. He demonstrated exemplary managerial abilities in championing innovation and value derivation for both conventional and unconventional resources. He served as an In-house Petroleum Engineering Consultant for SLB in ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Devon Energy and El Paso Energy offices. He was the first Project Manager TGCoE SLB Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Aramco Projects.

Dr. Sani’s time with Marathon Oil Corporation, Houston, USA was as a Senior Completions Engineer in the Eagle Ford Shale Asset IPT embracing all-encompassing leadership roles. He created completions database and skillfully performed design and optimization studies that fundamentally improved horizontal well completions process and saved cost. He authored 3 chapters for the intricate and widely-used Life of Well Documentation.

Dr. Sani’s time with BHP Billiton Petroleum Resources, Houston, USA was in a highly demanding role of a Principal Production Engineer for the Haynesville Shale Asset Production Unit and Technical Services. He led and streamlined efforts for completions program and guided extensive production improvement operations. He produced the Basis of Completions Design (BOCD), which was ultimately adopted as the primary reference source for completion designs and operations for the Asset. He carried out DCA, RTA, built type curves and orchestrated optimization project for horizontal wells that generated positive cash flow during a downtime. He carried out comprehensive completions diagnostic study examining horizontal wells spacing, fracture propagation, well communication, and production impact from frac hits in depleted areas, which became instrumental in overhauling the entire completions program. He conducted several project-based knowledge-sharing exercises for junior-engineers.

Dr. Sani’s time as a Petroleum Engineering Consultant with Saudi Aramco was in the Gas Reservoir Management Department (GRMD) with the GAP and SDGM Division for the Ghawar Field. He held direct lead of providing all aspects of Petroleum Engineering operations and services including managing human services while applying proactive measures to maximize efficiency. He created Reservoir Staging Index, implemented AI-assisted synthetic sonic log and supervised G&G real-time well placement and improvement. He launched groundbreaking technologies and finalized in-depth strategic business plans to achieve optimum production that resulted in lower well cost and slashed CapEx by over 20%, while reducing footprints without compromising future rate commitments. He coordinated the high-profile and exceptionally valuable Special Gas Event Solution – Integrated Reservoir Study for Abqaiq Field Reserve Evaluation and the Developmental Plan for a 500 MMSCFD production facility. He hosted engaging trainings and knowledge-sharing exercises for junior-engineers to support crucial well planning, stimulation requirements, operations, and evaluations.

Dr. Sani has been an active member and is serving in different roles for several professional associations: SPE, AIChE, AAPG, ESGADIA and AkSES. He has received several merit awards, scholarships and recognitions during his career from the academia and from the O&G Industry. He has organized and chaired O&G shows, conferences, workshops and symposiums globally.
